With harsh weather conditions, hot weather all year round is an advantage for localities such as Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan to develop high-value agriculture if they can ensure enough water for irrigation. Because of the hot weather all year round, the high temperature range between day and night helps crops to have high yields and superior quality compared to other regions, in addition, hot sun also helps plants less susceptible to pests and diseases. harm.
In recent years, localities in the South Central region have advocated turning disadvantages into advantages to develop a number of crops with very high economic value that only hot dry areas have, such as green apple trees, etc. grapes, green asparagus... for a value of up to billions of dong/ha per year...
As a unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development located in Ninh Thuan province, over the years, Nha Ho Cotton Research and Agricultural Development Institute (referred to as Nha Ho Institute) has focused on research, seed transfer and development. technical processes for crops such as rice, maize, vegetables of all kinds, and fruit trees; research and transfer varieties and technical processes of crops endemic to semi-arid areas such as grapes, green apples, green asparagus... serving agricultural restructuring to adapt to climate change for the region South Central.
Dr. Mai Van Hao, Director of Nha Ho Institute, said that from the practical needs of production, in the period 2017 - 2022, the Institute participated in the selection and was ordered by ministries and localities to perform 29 tasks. Science and Technology.
The Institute has selected and identified promising plant varieties suitable for the arid South Central region, including: The group of fruit trees has two varieties: fresh grapes (NH01-152 and NH16-01) with economic value. high economy; 4 grape varieties used for wine processing (NH02-37, NH02-66, NH02-97 and NH02-137); 1 dual-use grape variety (NH01-26); 2 apple varieties (TN1 and TN05) have higher yield, quality, and economic efficiency than previously produced apple varieties in the region; 2 mango varieties (R2E2 and LD12); 1 variety of jackfruit (Thai early ripening); 2 varieties of custard apple (Tay Ninh 2 and Binh Thuan) and 1 variety of guava (Taiwan Le).
The group of forage plants has selected and identified 2 grass varieties (Mulato II and V3); 1 legume (Stylo); 1 biomass maize variety (DH17-5); 1 variety of sorghum (Latte). The vegetable group has identified two green asparagus varieties Atlas and Articus.
Along with the selection of varieties, Nha Ho Institute also studies, builds and completes technical processes for the development of selected promising plant varieties for the arid South Central region. In which, there are two prominent cultivation techniques for wine grape varieties issued by the agricultural sector of Ninh Thuan province and applied to production; 2 technical processes of red wine production and processing, white wine production and processing; 4 standards for raw materials and processing of grape wine. Nha Ho Institute has also built many high-tech application farming processes, pest and disease management, harvesting, preservation, processing, etc., on the objects of the above-mentioned crop groups.
According to Dr. Mai Van Hao, in plant groups such as fruit trees, vegetable crops, and feed crops, the Institute has selected 1 to 3 varieties with good adaptability to climate change conditions. dry, hot region to ensure the introduction of plant structure transformation for the South Central Coast and surrounding areas.
In particular, over the past time, in addition to producing and transferring varieties of food crops for production in the region, the Institute has focused on research on grapevines, green apple trees and green asparagus. These are local trees. Accordingly, the unit has researched and selected high-quality grape varieties, along with a safe farming technical process, designed and built appropriate high-tech application of grape farming models. with dry, hot and windy conditions like Ninh Thuan.
Similarly, for apple trees, the Institute also selected apple varieties with large fruit size and built a cultivation process that applied technology suitable to dry conditions in the South Central region, saving water, controlling Good pest control and very high fruit quality. For asparagus plants , the Institute has also selected varieties, built a high-tech application process in propagation and commercial production, the process has been recognized by the Department of Crop Production as a technical advancement for dissemination into production. export.
"On the basis of initial results, we researched and built experimental models of varieties, as well as processes for applying intensive farming techniques to introduce to localities, businesses and farmers. people access, learn and apply.
Currently, the models built by the Institute have attracted many farmers in the area to study and apply, especially a number of enterprises have successfully put into production. In the coming time, we will focus on researching and transferring research results to reduce labor and material costs. Especially researching and applying mechanization, digital technology and automating some stages in production to serve large-scale development; research, process and use products to improve value chains, develop circular economy on each crop of the region”. - Dr. Mai Van Hao
