On June 3 in Lam Dong, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the People's Committees of Dak Nong and Lam Dong provinces and partners organized the launch of the Landscape Management Project. comprehensive sustainability.
The three specific goals of the project include, strengthening forest ecosystems, improving livelihoods and sustainable food production suitable for the Central Highlands region.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh, the project is assessed by the Vietnamese government as an important and appropriate initiative to directly contribute to and promote the implementation of sustainable development goals, strategic and national commitments on greenhouse gas emission reduction, green growth, forest protection, sustainable agricultural development of Vietnam in general and the Central Highlands region in particular.
In order to transform towards a sustainable landscape without deforestation, the project will develop and pilot an integrated approach on forest ecosystems, generating revenue from forests to keep farmers on their land and increase their income. their income in a sustainable way, contributing to improving the livelihoods of people living near the forest.
Mr. Patrick Haverman, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Vietnam said that the joint efforts of the two sides of Vietnam and the EU in tackling deforestation and forest degradation will bring positive impacts to local communities. , especially vulnerable ethnic minorities, who live mainly on forest ecosystems.
In addition to the EU's support of 5 million euros, there are four other international organizations that will provide additional technical assistance to the project, namely the Center for International Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the European Forestry Institute (EFI), the European Forestry Institute (EFI). Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The project will be implemented in 4 years, from 2022 to 2026 in Lam Dong and Dak Nong provinces.
The project aims to reach 25,000 hectares of natural forests by 2026, which will be protected, reduce emissions equivalent to about 3 million tons of CO2, and improve livelihoods for 35% of the population in the two provinces, especially in ethnic minorities and women. Improve sustainability in production with the goal of increasing the value of key commodities by 25%.
The results of the project will be replicated and integrated into Vietnam's development strategies and policies.
