Nearly 100 percent of all cattle and aquaculture farms in Vietnam have been found to be feeding their herd antibiotics to prevent diseases, according to a recent report by the country’s animal health authority. While salbutamol, a chemical making livestock produce more meat, is banned and strictly monitored by authorities, the use of antibiotics is still left unregulated, sparking new fears about excessive residues in food.

HÀ NỘI  — The Hà Ná»™i authorities will tighten food safety management and inspection during the Food Safety Action Month taking place in all provinces and cities nationwide from April 15. Speaking at a workshop to launch the action month yesterday in Hà Ná»™i, Deputy Health Minister Nguyá»…n Thanh Long said that food safety was one of the major issues of concern for the government and the National Assembly.

Four out of seven biofuel plants have been found using Chinese technology, while three others using technology imported from China and other countries such as the US, Denmark and India. The news that the VND2.2 trillion Dung Quat Bioethanol Ethanol run by BRS-BF has halted its operation did not surprise anyone, because the plant has been ‘at the point of death’ since April 2015. PV Oil, a subsidiary of the national oil & gas group PetroVietnam, the owner of Dung Quat, is also the major shareholder of OBF which runs the ethanol plant in Binh Phuoc province. PVB runs the biofuel in Phu Tho province.

Economic growth in developing East Asian countries is expected to ease in the next two years as the slowdown in China and sluggish pricing for commodities linger, according to new forecast released Sunday by the World Bank. The developing economies in the region, which include China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and several smaller countries, will grow 6.3% this year and 6.2% on average in 2017 and 2018, down from 6.5% in 2015, the Washington, D.C.-based organization estimated.

HCM CITY – The main causes of increased risk of school-food poisoning in HCM City are diverse but uncontrolled food sources, the increased number of school-food producers and the many unlicensed small-scale production workshops, experts have warned. In mid March, tens of students of Trần Quang Khải Primary School in District 1 were hospitalised due to school-food poisoning after having lunch provided by the city-based Tâm Tâm Ltd. Company. HCM City’s Food Hygiene and Safety Department later investigated the company and discovered many food safety-related violations, fining it VND48 million.

HÀ NỘI (VNS) — This year’s rural, agriculture and aquaculture census dates will be held from July 1- 30 nationwide, said Nguyá»…n Bích Lâm, general director of the General Statistics Office and deputy head of the 2016 census’s steering committee. Lâm said the census would focus on three main areas: agricultural forestry, salt and aquaculture production, and information on countryside circumstances and the lives of rural residents. The first area would survey the number of production workshops and labourers, and assess the labour structure-production scale.   

Vietnam pledges to step up collaboration efforts with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC)’s member nations in preventing and detering illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam. The deputy minister made the remark during the 48 th Meeting of the SEAFDEC Council which opened in Nha Trang city in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa on April 4. At the event, Tam said Vietnam has closely collaborated with regional countries in building a dialogue mechanism to exchange information and resolve issues relating to fishing activities in each other’s territorial waters, in a spirit of friendship and humanity.

Farmers in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta’s areas affected by saline intrusion have been urged to switch to other crops or breed shrimp or fish. Experts have said that farmers in these areas should gradually adapt to saline-water cultivation models. Professor Vo Tong Xuan, one of Viet Nam’s leading agriculture experts, said in coastal areas affected by saline intrusion, farmers should switch from growing only rice crops year-round and instead grow one rice crop in the rainy season and breed shrimp or fish in the dry season.

The Veterinary Department has confirmed that all Chinese chickens imported into Vietnam are illegal and the authorities of Vietnam and China have not yet signed any agreement on the export and import of livestock and poultry products. An official from the Veterinary Department told Infonet said the transport of livestock and poultry products across the Vietnam-China border is still going on. Particularly, Chinese chicken for meat and 1-day-old breeding chicken are imported into Vietnam while Vietnam’s buffaloes, cows, pigs are exported.

Vietnam’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has had to extend a public apology for claiming that most foods in the country are safe and that consumers are to blame for being unaware of that so-called 'fact.' Phat told a lawmaking National Assembly meeting in Hanoi on April 1 that “most of our foods are safe, but the people do not know [of this], so they feel all foodstuffs are unsafe.” The statement immediately sparked outrage among both lawmakers and consumers in a country where food scandals are not uncommon.

The Vietnam Food Administration has imposed a VND200 million (VND9,033) fine on FES Vietnam Co., Ltd. (FES), the owner of the MacCoffee brand, as a punitive measure for supplying products violating food safety regulations, according to newswire VTC.
