HÀ NỘI  — Việt Nam and Timor Leste will intensify their cooperation across politics, economy, investment, trade, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, energy, and communications. This was reached during the talks in Hà Ná»™i yesterday between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Phạm Bình Minh and Timor Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Hermani Coelho da Silva, who is on an official visit to Việt Nam from April 6-8.

A delegation of agricultural traders from the US has said it is excited about the potential to boost agriculture exports to Vietnam during a recent trip here. While in Hanoi earlier this week, members of the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association (WUSATA) met with Vietnam’s agriculture and trade ministers to discuss the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and promote trade and cooperation between 13 western states of the US and Vietnam.

CDFA Secretary Karen Ross visited Vietnam last week as part of a delegation of the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association (WUSATA), a non-profit formed in 1980 by the 13 western state departments of agriculture as well as the territorial departments in Guam and Samoa. For more than three decades, WUSATA has offered programs and services to assist exporters of high-value food and agricultural products.

Thailand based consumer goods and direct sales firm Giffarine Skyline Unity is reportedly planning to enter Vietnam market via a 20:80 joint venture (JV). Meanwhile, Dongwha Enterprise, a South Korean wood processor and manufacturer, has invested nearly $70 million in its JV with the state-owned Vietnam Rubber Group. In the tech space, US firm Dell has entered an agreement to give ten $6,000 scholarships to startups under the Topica Founder Institute programme. Giffarine Skyline Unity to form 10 million baht JV in Vietnam Bangkok-headquartered consumer goods company Giffarine Skyline Unity is looking at a foray into the Vietnam market through a 10 million baht ($283,000) joint venture in registered capital by the end of 2016, the Bangkok Post reported. The firm plans to hold 20 per cent of the JV, while the remaining 80 per cent will be owned by its partners, which are a group of Thai businessmen.

A delegation from Dong Nai Province in Vietnam is touring Western New York, looking for information on agriculture in the Empire State, opportunities for Vietnamese students in East Coast schools and promoting investment and tourism in the Southeast Asian country. Dong Nai is the food provider for Ho Chi Minh City, known to an American generation as Saigon. Speaking through interpreter Son Le, Provincial Vice Chairman Tran Van Vinh says he's interested in American higher education.

Vietnam and Australia will promote sci-technology cooperation, focusing mainly on healthcare, agriculture and the environment. Representatives from the two sides reached the consensus during the First Vietnam-Australia Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) on Cooperation in Science and Technology in Canberra, Australia on March 17. Accordingly, the two countries will boost links in applying biomedical technology in healthcare, disease diagnosis and treatment, while advancing the use of bio-technologies in agricultural production, farm produce processing, breeding, aquaculture, post-harvest preservation, and disease prevention in these sectors.

HCM CITY — The Prime Minister has approved a project for three new farm co-operative models for rice, aquatic products and fruit in the Cá»­u Long (Mekong) Delta by 2020. The project aims to promote connections between co-operatives and farmers, as well as improve the conditions of local people. It will be carried out in three phases in the delta’s 13 provinces and cities.

CJ Cooperation will remain running in the upcoming auction to become a strategic investor of Vietnam’s leading meat processor Vissan despite doubt over the South Korean firm’s ability to satisfy all selection criteria. The auction to choose strategic investors for the Vietnam Meat Industries Limited Company (Vissan) will be held on March 24, 2016, where the Vietnamese meat firm will sell a 14 per cent stake (11.3 million shares) to a maximum of three investors.
 

HA NOI  (VNS) — The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) inaugurated the Viet Nam-Korea Free Trade Agreement (VKFTA) Support Centre in Ha Noi yesterday.
The centre aims at disseminating areas related to the FTA as well as supporting businesses of the two countries to make use of the FTA, which came into effect on December 20, 2015, to boost commercial transaction and investment. The VKFTA covers many areas including certificate of origin, trade protection, hygiene and food safety, and plant quarantine, apart from technical barriers to trade and service, investment, intellectual property, competition and other legal issues.

Vietnam’s homegrown diversified conglomerate  Masan Group will be competing with South Korea’s CJ Cheiljedang Corp (CJ) in a bid to acquire strategic 14 per cent stake in food processor Vissan – the latest of the state-owned companies to have had an IPO as part of the ongoing privatisation spiral. Vissan general director Van Duc Muoi, in an interview with local press, revealed that Vietnam French Cattle Feed JSC (Proconco) and Agro Nutrition Company (Anco), two subsidiaries that Masan had acquired last year, have each submitted bids for the entire equity interest (14 per cent) that the Vissan is offering at the auction .

 

AME Management: Overall, Canadian farmers get increased market access from TTP, plus better dispute settlement. The October 2015 Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement is a substantial trade treaty for its 12 members, and like other trade treaties, it will introduce concessions on market access, such as tariff reductions and increased import quotas, as discussed below. But there is also considerable focus on food safety regulations as well as on biotechnology and organic standards, since these can be major sources of non-tariff barriers (eg. I may try to make my food inspection rules or my organic standards a little different than yours so I can keep yours out).

 In 1974, Vietnam deployed a group of its young people to come to Tanzania, and learn how to make cashew nut seedling from some of the Tanzania agricultural research institutes, one of them being the Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute in Mtwara. At Naliendele, they were taught how to make seedling and on how to plant cashew nut crop-which is one of the traditional crops in Mtwara and other regions along the Indian Ocean.

HA NOI (VNS) — Vietnamese and Japanese researchers from the Ha Noi-based University of Science and Technology, Rubber Research Institute of Viet Nam and Nagaoka University of Technology have collaborated to develop an environment-friendly and sophisticatedly deproteinised natural rubber. "Allergy is one of the serious problems using natural rubber gloves. We can solve this problem," Professor Masao Fukuda from Nagaoka University of Technology said at a symposium today in Ha Noi.
