Seafood Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has successfully raised Japanese seaweed in Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province. This success promises to be a new job for the people of the island district, helping them to get rich sustainably.
The Seagrape seaweed farming model has been implemented by the Seafood Research Institute (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) for 2 years (2018 - 2019). Grape seaweed is raised with sea water in 5 cement tanks with an area of 50m2. Farming equipment includes a grid net, aerator and exhaust system.
The method of raising grape seaweed is quite simple, the seaweed is put in a grid placed on the sandy bottom of the tank. Grid blisters are arranged in 2 rows along with the tank, each row of 5 blisters. After 6 times of farming, the seaweed grows well, the body of the seaweed is 5cm high, shiny green, soft, and succulent. Each month provides over 100kg of finished grape seaweed for the island district.
Japanese grape seaweed has just been successfully raised in Ly Son. |
Mr. Do Anh Duy, an officer of the Institute of Seafood Research, said that in Vietnam, this species of grape seaweed has been found and distributed naturally in Phu Quy, Con Dao, and Phu Quoc, and Ly Son islands, but these forms are not farmed. grown due to its small size. Grape seaweed being cultivated in Ly Son originates from Japan.
Currently, seaweed farming is developing widely in Ninh Thuan, Khanh Hoa, and Phu Yen provinces due to the suitable habitat conditions for coastal localities and great export value. Grape seaweed has very high economic and nutritional value because grape seaweed has trace minerals, vitamins, and amino acids... very beneficial to health. Therefore, this model has great prospects and thrives in island districts.
According to Mr. Do Anh Duy, the process of implementing this model is relatively simple, the first requirement is that the water source must ensure high salinity and stability from 30-34%: "The process of implementing this model is relatively simple. simple. The first requirement is a source of water. The water source in Ly Son is best deployed in the coastal area. Because we use water directly from the sea. Water from the sea is the main source of nutrients for algae to grow and develop. Third, this object does not require high technical as well as care and management. Initially deploying the model, I realized that this model has great prospects.
The successful model of seaweed farming in cement tanks opens up a new economic direction for the people of Ly Son, helping people to change careers and replace inefficient farming methods. Because grape seaweed is easy to raise, has a fast growth rate, and low investment costs, the initial investment capital is over 120 million VND to build tanks and supporting equipment... Grape seaweed varieties cost from 60,000 - 80,000 VND /kg. Harvest time is short, only 30-40 days, the next harvests are 10-15 days apart.
The model of seaweed farming in cement tanks will be replicated by Ly Son district and propagated and mobilized people to participate in the model. |
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Trung - Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Ly Son district, said that the initial efficiency of the seaweed farming model is very high.
“If a household participates in the implementation of a model with an area of about 50m2 for 1 household to do, after deducting costs, each year, it earns over 100 million VND in profit. In the near future, the Seafood Research Institute will transfer to the district. The Center is the receiving unit and will replicate this model for people to participate. If people have a need to plant, the Center will receive instructions and technical support for people to build tanks and take care of grape seaweed and build infrastructure, "said Nguyen Dinh Trung.
In recent years, the number of tourists to Ly Son island to visit and enjoy sea products is very much. However, seaweed on Ly Son island is scarce. Therefore, bringing an object of farming with economic value such as grape seaweed to Ly Son will provide a source of green vegetables to serve tourists, contributing to the development of the household economy.
