Vietnam is a key partner of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in tackling issues of rural poverty. Productivity on either a land or labour basis is low in Vietnam, and there is limited availability of arable land. An increasing population and competition from urban and industrial uses are pushing more smallholder farmers onto marginal lands, including the sandy soils of the south-central coast. Overexploitation of land, water and soil resources, together with inappropriate farming approaches, is resulting in land degradation in these systems.

Agricultural insurance is a non-life insurance policy where the subjects for insurance are the risks arising from agricultural production and rural life. Vietnam is the home of many crops, the country’s agricultural products such as coffee, black pepper, rubber… that have comparative advantages against many other countries in the world, and can generate high export value. In March 2011, Vietnam’s Prime Minister issued Decision No.315 on piloting agricultural insurance in 20 province/cities for some agricultural products such as rice crops, shrimps, fish... Nevertheless, many crops and livestock, including coffee, remain out of the scope of the pilot programme. Therefore, based on research and actual implementation of agricultural insurance policy so far, this article is an effort to analyze the necessity to apply agricultural insurance on coffee plantation, such as the risk of the weather, prices, market; analyzing policy framework and implementation for agricultural insurance; the necessity to apply agricultural insurance on coffee plantation and recommendations for deploying agricultural insurance on coffee in Vietnam.
Report issued by USDA - Foreign Agricultural Services
Post’s initial coffee production forecast for marketing year (MY) 2015/16 is 28.67 million 60-kg bags (bags), or 1.72 million metric tons (MMT) of green coffee beans, due to good flowering and cherry setting. Post’s initial green bean export forecast for MY 2015/16 is 25.5 million bags, or 1.53 MMT.
Post also revises its coffee production estimate in MY 2014/15 down to about 28.17 million (bags), or 1.69 MMT of green coffee due to lower yield from what has been described as a down year, following record MY 2013/14 production. The total coffee export estimate for MY 2014/15 is revised down to 26.43 million bags, or 1.59 MMT Green Bean Equivalent (GBE) due to decreased exportable supplies more than offsetting increased soluble exports
