Spain returned Vietnam pepper products but with a very small quantity
Spanish authorities have recently detected the quantity of carbendazim fungicide exceeded the limit allowed in the shipment of black pepper of a Vietnamese enterprise exported to Spain. In the afternoon of February 17th, Vietnam Pepper Association has responded to this problem.
According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, it is real that Spain returned Vietnam pepper products but with a very small quantity. However, the worry here is that other opponents of Vietnam will take advantage of this situation to affect the credibility of Vietnam pepper industry.
Mr. Do Ha Nam - Chairman of Vietnam Pepper Association said: "Some countries will take advantage of this issue to boycott Vietnam products and this is the most dangerous thing. Because we could stop one thing in isolated cases, but when the supply exceeded the demand, people will see it as a technical barrier and will be detrimental to Vietnam pepper industry."
According to Mr. Nam, pepper contaminated fungicide or plant protection products is partly because the pepper area increased massively in the past few years made it hard for growers to control the use of plant protection products. Besides, it is partly because we ourselves do not have control pepper right inside the country before exporting which made it returned after checking.
Mr. Do Ha Nam also said: "We have to establish and invest in domestic goods testing companies. Enterprises also have to build large key areas to control these products in terms of quality and origin under the agreement between buyer and seller. In this way, we ensure credibility among buyers and sellers."
In Europe, Spain is a large import market of Vietnam pepper with over 40,000 tons. This country is considered a very tough market, especially when opponents of Vietnam such as Indonesia, India increase pepper planted area that makes the quality controlling process more and more stringent. In 2015, Vietnam continued to dominate the world pepper market with over 50% of production, which worth over 2.4 billion USD.
