SIGNING COOPERATION AGREEMENT ON ELEPHANT-FRIENDLY TOURISM MODEL

On December 15, the People's Committee of Dak Lak province held a cooperation signing ceremony on an elephant-friendly tourism model with the Animals Asia Foundation.
According to the cooperation agreement, Dak Lak province will minimize towards not organizing activities affecting elephants' welfare. Specifically, the province will not organize elephant riding tourism; elephant competitions; elephants march for hours on asphalt or concrete roads; use elephants to recreate scenes of hunting and taming elephants.
The Animals Asia Foundation is responsible for mobilizing legal resources for technical and financial support to benefit elephants and households with income from elephant riding tourism. In addition, the units will organize an elephant-friendly tourism model, contributing to the conservation of domestic elephants in Dak Lak province.
Through the cooperation agreement, the Animals Asia Foundation and Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee aim to end the use of elephant riding tourism and activities affecting the welfare of elephants in tourism and festivals, contributing to elephant conservation in the province.

From 2012 until now, that elephant conservation in Dak Lak province has been interested and effectively supported by international organizations. In the first phase, from 2016-2018, Dak Lak province was supported with US$ 50,000. In the second phase, from 2019-2021, the province is received non-refundable support of US$ 60,000.
At the ceremony, Mr. Y Giang Gry Nie Knong, Vice Chairman of Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee, said that the province's elephant population is about 140 individuals, a 90% decrease in the number of elephants compared to 1980.
It is a worrying phenomenon in Dak Lak province in particular and the whole country. Therefore, to continue solving difficulties for elephant conservation from 2022 to 2026, the Animals Asia Foundation will support the province's Elephant Conservation Center with US$ 231,000.
"Dak Lak province commits to supporting the proposals of the Animals Asia Foundation to build and deploy an elephant-friendly tourism model. From there, towards ending the use of elephant riding tourism as activities affecting the elephant's complex in tourism and festivals, contributing to elephant conservation in Dak Lak province," said Mr. Y Giang Gry Knong.
