HA NOI — Cutting-edge technology will be applied in the cultivation of tomatoes and low-potassium lettuce in Viet Nam as part of an agriculture collaboration between Vietnamese multinational information technology corporation FPT and Fujitsu, a leading provider of IT products and services. Agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and Japan has been developing over recent years; last November the export of Vietnamese mangoes to Japan was permitted and subsequently, Japanese apples were licensed to be exported to Vietnam. At the end of last year, 25 tons of Japanese apples bearing the Aomori brand were officially exported to Vietnam and sold in Aeon supermarket chains.

CUU LONG DELTA — Local authorities plan to dredge rivers and canals in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta to create more irrigation water for 300,000ha of newly planted rice crops, which face saline-water intrusion and a water shortage. Disease outbreaks among crops could also occur, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said. To deal with emergencies, local plant protection and cultivation departments have been told to monitor weather conditions.
HANOI - Vietnamese coffee exporters are not shipping fresh stock this week as they face tight supply due to dry weather prevailing in the country, traders said on Tuesday. The dry season in Vietnam, the world's top robusta producer, has started peaking in the Central Highlands coffee belt, requiring growers to step up the watering of trees. Traders said many growers were not selling their produce because domestic prices did not improve much from late February, when a kg of robusta was 29,300-29,500 dong ($1.3), the lowest since mid-Nov 2013.

Bijnor: Several teams comprising agricultural scientists from Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam and Nigeria have landed in Bijnor to study 'very good recovery rate' of sugar from sugarcane. Apart from visiting the fields and studying soil samples, they will also visit sugar mills of the region. According to OP Singh, district cane officer, "Representatives from four countries -- Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam and Naigeria -- have come here to know the working condition of our factories and to talk to the farmers about the cultivation of sugarcane in these areas. The 19-member is divided into four parts. Teams from Brazil and Nigeria have four members each, while Indonesia had three and Vietnam eight members."

HCM CITY — The municipal agriculture department plans to expand application of Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGap) standards to 1,730ha, or 50 per cent of the city's vegetable gardens, by 2015. Le Minh Dung, deputy director of the city's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, told a forum organised recently in HCM City that by then, 30 per cent of vegetable gardens in the city are expected to have VietGap certification.
"Cooperatives are key components to implement policy of restructuring agricultural sector and build a new countryside", said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat at the conference on 3-year implementation of the Cooperative Law held on 2nd March in Ha Noi.

Specifically, he supported, consulted and coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to participate in Food Security Conference in Niigata (Japan) which helped to improve the position of Vietnam agriculture in Japan as well as in other international organizations.
