Duong Thi Thanh Luong, Deputy Director of the Board of Management of the Vietnam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation Project (VnSAT) Kon Tum said 4,530 farming households participating in the project have grown 4,126 hectares of coffee trees in a sustainable way. In addition, VnSAT Kon Tum has helped 73 households cut down old coffee trees and replant new ones on 41.6 hectares.
Besides, two private nurseries and one state-owned nursery have received aids from VnSAT to upgrade their infrastructures. The three facilities have obtained certificated coffee seedlings in accordance with the standards of planting and replanting new coffee trees set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
VnSAT has installed and put into operation water-saving systems for 89.4 hectares of coffee trees grown by the two agricultural cooperatives of Sau Nhung and Cong Bang PoKo and the two cooperative groups of Binh Minh and Lien Ket in Dak Ha district.
VnSAT project has change Kon Tum coffee growers' awareness of organizing production and accessing scientific and technical advances to add value and increase profitability in coffee production with the aim at high-quality and organic coffee production.
Along with that,VnSAT has helped Cong Bang Poko Agricultural Cooperative install an initial processing system with a capacity of 5-6 tons of coffee cherries per hour; setting a sieving system to sort dry coffee bean with a capacity of 7 tons per hour. Besides, Dak Mar cooperative group has also been assisted to install a preliminary processing system with a capacity of 2-3 tons per hour.
In order to promote local coffee growers approach sustainable coffee replanting, VnSAT Kon Tum has provided the list of farmers who needed loans and the total area for replanting coffee trees to banks such as BIDV, Agribank and Sacombank . So far these banks have disbursed VND2.58 billion to 14 households to replant 25.6 hectares of new coffee trees.
In 2021-2022, VnSAT Kon Tum will continue to implement two sub-projects including: upgrading traffic system between the communes of Dak La - Ngo Wang - Dak Ui - Dak Long to serve sustainable coffee production and upgrading traffic system to serve coffee linkage groups in Ha Mon commune (Dak Ha district). Accordingly, 8 intra-field roads will be constructed with a total length of the network of 41.16 kilometers and a total investment of over VND 60 billion.
In Kon Tum, seventeen farmers' organizations have been trained to improve their organizational and management capacity. These organizations have also linked up with input suppliers and processors to consume farm produce. By doing so, all members of the farmers' organizations could easily sell their coffee for stable prices. As a result, the value of the Vietnamese coffee industry has been increased, contributing to sustainability of Vietnamese coffee farming.
