On December 23, the Department of Livestock Production (MARD) conducted the Conference summarizing the executive direction of 2021 and plan implementation for 2020.
According to the Director of the Department of Livestock Production Duong Tat Thang, in 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic caused disruption of supply chains, interrupted circulation, transportation and heavily affected agriculture in general and livestock in particular.
“In 2021, the livestock industry had a stable development, able to handle the need of food necessities for consumers domestically and partly export. Until recently, the country’s number of pig herds was still maintained at 28.1 million pigs; approximately 8.8 million cows and buffaloes; meat quantity of all kinds reached about 6.18 million tons; 16.7 billion eggs and 1.3 million tons of milk”, Mr. Duong Tat Thang shared.
According to reports of the Department of Livestock Production, through estimation of 2021, the average growth in value of livestock production in 2021 reached about 5-6%. Meat quantity of all kinds reached about 6.2 million tons, in which pork reached about 3.82 million tons (up 6.1%); poultry reached about 1.7 million tons (up 5.8%); grass-eating cattle meat reached about 0.68% (up 6%); eggs quantity reached about 16 billion eggs (up 7.5%); milk quantity about reached 1.2 million tons (up 11.5%).
The estimated total production of animal feed in 2021 reached 21.4 million tons (up 5.9% over 2020), in which pig food reached about 10.88 million tons (up 22%), poultry food reached 9.75 million tons (down 8.7%), food for other kinds of cattle reached about 0.76 million tons (up 7.3%).
Over the 11 months of 2021, livestock production export reached $393 million, up 4.0% over the same session. Export turnovers of livestock production reached over $3.1 billion, down 1.8% compared to the same session of 2020.
In 2022, the livestock industry set an average production value growth target of 4% to 5%; meat quantity of all kinds reaching 6.44 million tons, a growth of 4.0%; eggs quantity reaching about 16.7 billion eggs and milk production reaching about 1.3 million tons.
In 2022, according to forecasts, the Covid-19 pandemic will continue to be complicated, disruption of supply chains due to the prolonged influence of Covid-19 in 2021 will heavily affect production and the market for livestock production.
The implementation of Livestock Development Operation in the period 2021-2030, vision for 2045 will contribute to the growth of livestock production to become a commodity-producing industry, with market orientation, handling the need of food necessities for consumers in the country and orienting export of potential products like pork, poultry, eggs, milk products, processed honey, cattle foods.
Concluding the conference, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien highly appreciates the results that the livestock industry has achieved in 2021. Whereby, the Department of Livestock Production needs to pay special attention to the drafting and finalizing of legal documents, through that create resources to realize the Livestock Development Operation in the period 2021-2030, vision for 2045.
“If we want to develop a stable livestock production, it is necessary to solve the math for the environment, implement the circular economy model, in terms of science and technology, we need to play a role in creating motivation to build a closed chain. The implementation of the operation must set goals for each year, accordingly give out solutions for implementation," said Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien.
