Farmers in Trieu Thanh communes, Vinh Hoa were like sitting on fire when nearly 30 hectares of summer-autumn rice after spraying the herbicide Sofigold died. Although the drug dealer has provided an antidote, the roots of the rice are still black, the leaves are fading, and the signs of death have not stopped.
In this year's summer-autumn crop, because many households abandoned their fields and did not cultivate, Mr. Vo Van Giao in hamlet 2 - Don Due, Vinh Hoa commune (belonging to Don Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative) gathered land to plant rice with a total area of rice. 1.5 ha. After sowing for 1-2 days, he went to the plant protection drug shop Thuy Anh in Ho Xa town (Vinh Linh district) to buy the herbicide Sofigold 271W and spray it.
Previously, Mr. Giao and many households here used to use the herbicide Sofigold 271W in a bottle, but due to being out of stock, the agent advised to use the packaged drug. He followed the manufacturer's instructions and sprayed with a dose of 1 pack of 50g/pole (500m2).
However, after 5-7 days of spraying, the rice begins to show the phenomenon of wilting leaves, black roots and death. As recorded, most of the households using Sofigold 271W herbicide for this summer-autumn rice crop in Vinh Hoa commune also died of rice. As for Mr. Giao's family, 1.5 hectares of rice are dying at a rate of 45-50%.
After the incident, Mr. Giao contacted the agent Thuy Anh directly and was given QT04 red super phosphate foliar fertilizer for detoxification. However, the percentage of rice plants that develop more roots is very low, the green rice plants also show signs of fading and slow growth.
As for Mr. Tran Thanh Quyet, village 1 - Don Due, Vinh Hoa commune, said that although he only sprayed 50g packages for 1 sao, he only sprayed 3 packages for 4 sao of rice. However, when spraying is completed, not only the grass dies, but the rice also dies at a very large rate.
“All inputs for rice cultivation this year have increased rapidly. Rice suffering like this, if it can be saved, will definitely affect the yield. It is recommended that the relevant authorities step in and determine the cause. If the cause is due to herbicides, the supplier must have a satisfactory compensation policy," said Mr. Quyet.
Also according to Mr. Quyet, during the off-season flood in late March and early April, the village's rice fields were not flooded, farmers handled the fields carefully, so people here have ruled out possible causes. Rice was killed by organic poisoning.
It is known that after the incident happened, the representative of the Sofigold 271W herbicide distribution unit came to find out. The Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Quang Tri province also went to determine the cause. Accordingly, the total area of dead rice in Vinh Hoa commune is 18.98 ha.
Mr. Le Phuoc Trang, Director of the Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Quang Tri province, said that after the incident happened, the supplier had recovered all unused drugs. When officers from the Plant Protection and Cultivation Sub-Department of Quang Tri province came to inquire, only the packages remained. Therefore, determining the cause is very difficult. The Sub-department has taken samples for testing, but the results are not available yet.
Mr. Trang added that in Trieu Thanh commune (Trieu Phong district) there are also dozens of households standing still because after using the herbicide Sofigold 271W, 9.78 hectares of rice were affected.
